Student-Led Transition Program
OCA has created activities to help new military families become comfortable with and feel at home in the school, including:
- Virtual guided tours showcasing different aspects of the school
- Descriptions of essential procedures such as dress code and other expectations
- Introduction to how courses are conducted
- Explanation of how breaks are scheduled
- How to submit homework
Each military student will be paired with a existing student that provides mentoring within the school environment. The experienced student mentor will engage in casual conversations unrelated to school or potential issues, including the military child’s concerns. Following the initial 2 week introductory period, these interactions will occur at least once a week.
The student-led team will assist the new military student with becoming acquainted with other OCA students, introduce the student to the school virtual environment, classroom conduct expectations, school procedures, school events, school activities, and the Military Point of Contact.
Our student-led transition team is the Student Ambassador’s Program. The Student Ambassadors welcome new students in homeroom, answer questions, and help with a VR skills clinic for new students.
OCA will host multiple events that will provide opportunities for military students to connect with other military students facing similar issues. This approach is designed to create a strong support system, that includes friendships.
