Frequently Asked Questions at OAO

Overview Questions

At Optima Academy Online, all courses are taught using grade-level standards. While curriculum content is not modified, we provide supports to help each student access and succeed in their learning environment.

Our supports include:

  • Differentiated assignments and flexible learning options
  • Tutoring and small-group interventions
  • One-on-one support as needed
  • Collaboration between teachers, families, and support staff

We follow an inclusion model, meaning students with exceptionalities learn alongside their peers while receiving accommodations to meet their individual needs.

Because our program is built on grade-level coursework and independent online learning, it may not be appropriate for all students. OAO may not be a good fit in situations such as:

  • The student requires placement in a fully contained ESE classroom
  • The student’s age is significantly different from their assigned grade level
  • There is a request to place the student below a grade already completed
  • The student qualifies for Extended School Year (ESY) services due to significant regression
  • The student is non-verbal (in most cases)
  • The student uses a modified curriculum (not exposed to grade-level standards)
  • The student’s documented performance is three or more grade levels below their assigned grade

Yes. Optima Academy Online is fully accredited through Cognia, ensuring all courses meet rigorous academic standards and are widely recognized by schools and colleges.

In addition, all OAO teachers are certified, providing students with high-quality instruction and a trusted learning experience.

Yes, a homeschooled student is eligible to participate in public school activities. Please check with your child’s zoned public school for more information.

Yes, Optima Academy Online offers accredited course work approved in the state of Florida. Course work is accredited through Cognia.

We offer a wide range of courses in core subjects, electives, and unique VR-enhanced classes.

Students at OAO begin using Virtual Reality (VR) in Grade 3 (starting in the spring), with continued integration through middle and high school, where VR is used regularly to reinforce course content.

VR enhances the learning experience by creating immersive, interactive environments where students can explore concepts in a more engaging way than traditional online learning. They can collaborate with peers, participate in virtual field trips, and interact with 3D models—helping build connection, increase engagement, and reduce feelings of isolation.

In subjects like Art, VR allows students to create and explore within fully immersive environments, turning lessons like color theory into hands-on experiences. Students may also complete art projects outside of VR using basic materials, depending on the assignment.

Yes. Here’s what families should plan to provide:

  • ELA literature books (a list will be provided by the teacher; you may purchase or borrow from the library)
  • Basic art supplies for Grades 3 and up
  • A laptop (must be provided by the family—recommended specs here)
  • VR headset (provided by OAO for students in Grades 4 and up)
  • K–2 students will receive a school-provided supply kit
  • No physical textbooks are sent—everything else is available through Canvas

Students in the Live Program at OAO follow a structured yet flexible daily schedule designed to balance real-time learning and independent work.

Each day, students attend teacher-led, interactive classes from 8:00 AM to 12:15 PM ET using Microsoft Teams, where they engage with teachers and classmates in real time. These sessions provide direct instruction, collaboration, and opportunities to ask questions live.

In the afternoons (1:00 PM – 3:00 PM ET, Monday–Thursday), students can join optional tutoring and small group sessions for additional support, enrichment, or personalized help.

Fridays are Independent Learning Days, meaning there are no live classes. Students use this time to complete assignments, review material, and prepare for the upcoming week at their own pace.

For students in grades 4 and above, Virtual Reality (VR) is integrated into select lessons to create immersive, engaging learning experiences that enhance understanding and connection.

High School & Diploma Questions

By 2027, students will be able to complete high school course requirements directly through OAO.

Option 1 | Home Education Students

  • Continue with Home Education Program & Complete a Home Education Affidavit. Here is an example for Florida Home Education Students: Click Here
  • Parents determine program completion.
  • Students are not eligible for a traditional diploma, as a home education student, but may use a Home Education Affidavit (accepted by colleges, universities, the military, and employers) that a parent can sign and notarize for records, along with an official transcript of completed coursework.
  • OAO provides supporting transcripts for completed coursework.
  • If so desired, Home Education Students may take the General Educational Development (GED) test to earn a high school equivalency diploma.

Option 2 | Transfer to our Charter Diploma-Granting Program for Senior Year – Florida Students Only

  • Students may transfer to our full-time, state-approved virtual charter program, Optima Classical Academy (virtual charter) in Collier County, where they can receive a state-provided high school diploma.

Standard & Required Testing Questions

Charter students enrolled through Collier County Public Schools in Florida must take Florida state assessments, including:

  • FAST Progress Monitoring (Grades 3–10)
  • BEST Writing (Grades 4–10)
  • End-of-Course (EOC) Exams (as applicable)
  • NGSSS Science (Grades 5 & 8)
  • PM1 and PM2 are administered virtually by OAO.
  • PM3 must be taken in person. Families will receive communication with testing dates and locations.

Students in grades K–2 complete FAST assessments using Star Early Literacy, Star Reading, and Star Math. That said, we often recommend Home Education enrollment for younger learners due to the flexibility it offers at this stage.

No. Home Education students are not required to take Florida state tests. However, they must complete an annual evaluation to demonstrate academic progress, which is submitted to their local school district.

Families must contact OAO in early May to request an evaluation by a certified teacher. The teacher will review your child’s i-Ready scores, grades, or a portfolio, complete the required form, and return it to you for submission to your local school district.

No. Home Education students may only take state tests through their local school district. OAO does not administer Florida state assessments for Home Education students.

Students using Florida’s PEP or FES-UA scholarships are typically required to complete an annual academic evaluation, which may include:

  • A norm-referenced assessment (e.g., i-Ready or FAST)
  • A portfolio review

Requirements may vary, so families should confirm with their scholarship provider.

Yes! OAO offers i-Ready assessments virtually for Florida families using PEP or FES-UA scholarships. These can help fulfill the annual evaluation requirement. Be sure to verify with your funding organization to ensure it meets their criteria.

Yes. All non-charter students—including Home Education, PEP/FES-UA, and Private Pay—are expected to complete i-Ready diagnostics. These help ensure that students receive personalized academic support and meet documentation needs where required.

The OAO House System helps build character, community, and camaraderie. Each student is placed in one of four houses based on their strengths:

  • Nightingale (Service)
  • Odysseus (Self-Governance)
  • Cincinnatus (Courage)
  • Galahad (Perseverance)

These experiences place students inside 360° environments where they can see and experience educational content in ways that traditional lessons cannot replicate.
