Singapore Math

Why Singapore Math?

Optima Classical Academy utilizes the Singapore Math Dimensions curriculum in grades 3-8. Singapore math focuses on equipping students with a more detailed understanding of math concepts. Then it reinforces them through a three step process of understanding – concrete, pictorial, and abstract. Singapore math is a highly effective tool for increasing student understanding and confidence in mathematics, and it aligns beautifully with the grammar, logic, and rhetoric structure of OCA, and its classical curriculum.

What is Singapore Math?

Singapore Math was developed in the 1980’s for the Singapore public school system. It was first introduced in the United States in 1998. Its foundation is focused on CPA (Concrete, Pictorial, Abstract) progression, number bonds, bar modeling, and mental math.

What Makes Singapore Math Different?

In traditional U.S. math learning methods students are taught in a simple two-step process. First they  will receive an example. Then will be asked to solve problems nearly identical to the original (repeating the same steps with different numbers). In Singapore math, the focus is on thinking through concepts and applying them in new ways. In this method, students can’t rely on simple replication. They are pushed to greater engagement and broader thinking from the beginning. This not only helps students become more successful problem solvers, it helps them gain a sense of confidence and resourcefulness.
