Military Families

Transition Planning for Military Families:

At OCA, we understand that military families often face challenges related to transitions. Thus, we offer comprehensive transition planning designed to meet the needs of military families.

Our OCA Student Counselor plays a important role in supporting military families. The OCA counselor routinely checks in on families to provide guidance and support.

Our Military Point of Contact, Curby Graham, is available to assist military families. You can reach him at (757) 814-0434.

Academic Planning for Military Families:

Academic planning for military families is a priority for us. During the summer, we offer one-on-one meetings with our Military Point Partner and School Counselor to discuss academic schedules, ensuring a smooth transition for incoming military families.

These meetings are intended to create academic plans that meet the unique needs of military families.

Resources and Educational Opportunities for Military Children:

OCA provides military families with an excellent educational experience. Our families can participate in a wide range of extracurricular activities, including various clubs, social hour, student ambassadors, and the House System. These activities ensure personal growth and also help military families connect with peers.

Student-Led Transition Team:

Our student-led program plays a vital role in helping military families transition to OCA. This student-led team offers virtual guided tours of the school and introduces new students to their classmates. Our student-led transition team is the Student Ambassador’s Program. The Student Ambassadors welcome new students in homeroom, answer questions, and help with a VR skills clinic for new students.

Support for Military ESE Children:

OCA understands that military families that have children with exceptional needs require unique support. For these families, OCA offers individual assistance, which includes meetings with our ESE Resource teacher that will review Individualized Education Plans (IEP).

Military Recognition Events:

Our school is committed to recognizing and honoring our military families. We have planned events like “Veteran’s Day” and special ceremonies that honor both active duty and retired military parents.

Access to Mental Health Services:

  • OCA understands that the well-being of military families is a high priority. As part of supporting their mental health, families have access to student Counselors, who provide counseling and mental health support. Please review Mental Health Challenges Facing Military Students

Veterans Day Project: Thank You Cards for Military Members

Around Veterans Day, The OAO counseling team collaborates with military families to create a list of active-duty and retired military members. During ELA class, students take time to write and design personalized thank you cards, expressing their gratitude and appreciation. These cards are then sent to the listed individuals, fostering a meaningful connection between students and those who have served our country.
